Introduction to 911 is Me!

Emergencies are a fact of life.  It is not a matter of whether you will ever experience an emergency, but when.  Beginning many years ago after one of the Southern California wildfires came a little too close for comfort, I began taking emergency preparedness seriously.

For years now I have kept small amounts of food, water, fuel, first aid kit, and other items in my car just in case of an emergency.  I never let my fuel tank fall below half full just in case I find myself in a situation where no gasoline is available.  I learned that lesson when one of the wildfires threatened nearby communities and there was a run on gasoline as people tried to get on the road headed away from the fire areas.  Local gas stations simply ran out of gas.

We would all like to think that we will never suffer the challenges of a major emergency, but as those who have experienced horrible storms, earthquakes, tsunami’s, and other disasters (both caused by nature and man) will attest, being prepared can quite literally be the difference between life and death.

Over the years I have had many occasions to talk with friends and family about the simple measures I have taken to prepare for an emergency.  Over the course of the last several months I have talked with quite a few people who have experienced the bitter winter storms in the Northeast and, most recently, the minor earthquakes in California.  Most of those I talked with still have not taken even the most minimal measures to provide food and water sufficient to last just a few days, let alone the other supplies necessary to ensure their safety and wellbeing during an extended emergency.

Our local emergency response folks are wonderful and I appreciate and applaud their dedication, but in the event a major disaster they will simply be spread too thin and have too few resources to reach and provide for everyone.  I have come to realize that in such a case, for me and my family, 911 is Me!  Anyone who is not prepared to provide for their own basic needs and those of their family is playing a dangerous game with all their lives.

That is why I decided to create this site.  As resources are available I plan to provide information about what is necessary to be prepared for emergencies of varying severity and to identify the best possible sources for acquiring what you need in order to be prepared.

Check for updates, tips, and survival tricks frequently at www.911isMe.wordpress.com, keep in touch with us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/911isme, and follow us on Twitter as 911isMe (@911iseveryone) .  For your convenience, I have assembled quite a few items in the Emergency Store that will save you time and money in creating your own emergency preparation kits.  To be safe, you should have one at home as well as one for each vehicle you drive, because you never know when an emergency could strike.

Together we can save lives!
